SciFi Technology

Contained here are some notes on the sort of technology available in a Yags SciFi setting.

Space Weapons

Chainguns (TL 6+)

Simplest weapons for space combat. At this technology level, the only practical way to hit targets at such long ranges is to fire a lot of bullets at the target.

Nuclear Missiles (TL 7+)

Good range, but limited delta-v at low technology levels. Very destructive if they get close enough.

Railguns (TL 8+)

Similar to chainguns, but using electromagnetic propulsion to fire a small number of rounds at very high velocity. More accurate, longer ranged, but still limited relative to higher tech alternatives.

Massdrivers (TL 9+)

Fire a single shot at very high velocity. More efficient than railguns. They have the advantage that if they hit, they are just as effective at any range.

Lasers (TL 9+)

Lasers don't become practical until TL 9+, though are available before then. They have substantially better ranges than kinetic weapons.

Sandcasters (TL 10+)

Deploy fine dust particles which absorb and reflect light, used as a defence against lasers, and to some extent, particle beams.

Nuclear Pumped X-ray Lasers (TL 10+)

Nuclear missiles which power a highly destructive x-ray laser at the target. Greater effective range than a standard nuclear missile.

Particle Beams (TL 11+)

Particle beams are more damaging that lasers, though aren't quite as long ranged.

Meson Guns (TL 12+)

Make use of weird stuff to avoid armour.

Plasma Cannons (TL 13+)

Shorter range than lasers and particle beams, but more destructive.

Anti-Matter Particle Beam (TL 13+)

Tends to be good against armour, causes high levels of secondary radiation damage. Not as deadly as it sounds though, since the beams tend to be very low density.

Fusion Cannons (TL 14+)

Similar to plasma cannons, but do destructive explosive damage, and are very effective against large targets.

Fusion Beams (TL 15+)

Beam version of fusion cannons. Greater range and accuracy.
